BA CBCS

The Bachelor’s Degree Programmes offered through this prospectus follow the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS)
introduced by UGC.
The CBCS provides the learner with flexibility to study the subjects/courses at their own pace; greater choice of interdisciplinary, intra-disciplinary and skill-based courses; and mobility to different institutions for studies.
The system has the following advantages:
1. Learner can undertake as many credits as they can cope with (without repeating all courses in a given semester if
s/he fails in one/more courses).
2. Allows learners to choose a combination of inter-disciplinary, intra-disciplinary courses, skill oriented courses
(even from other disciplines according to their learning needs, interests and aptitude).
3. Makes education broad-based and at par with global standards.
4. Offers flexibility for learners to study at different times and at different institutions to complete the programme.
Credits earned at one institution can be transferred to another institution.

BA CBCS Based Bachelor’s Degree Programmes- Points to understand
The University has launched bachelor’s degree programmes under the Choice Based Credit System. These can be
grouped into Bachelor Degree programmes and the Bachelor Honours programmes. Although the minimum time for
completing these two kinds of programmes is three years (and a maximum of six years), each has different credit
weightage and mix of disciplinary, interdisciplinary and skill-based courses. The Bachelor Degree programmes (Bachelor
of Arts, Bachelors of Science, Bachelor of Commence, etc) have 22 courses each, totalling 132 credits. These programmes
are broad in scope and give the learner an opportunity to study more than one discipline along with skill based courses
(including language communication skills). The nine Bachelors Honours programmes that are on offer, on the other hand,
have 26 courses each, totalling 148 credits. These programmes provide the learners with an opportunity to take up a
single discipline for in-depth study and explore subjects beyond their discipline. Learners should choose the type of
Programme they would like to pursue keeping their interests, needs and future plans. Once admission has been taken in
a particular programme, the University will not allow change of programme. You will have to get the admission to the
programme cancelled and register afresh for another programme.
For the July 2019 session, IGNOU is offering only “General Bachelors Degree programme under CBCS
